Mt. Loolmalasin
The road less traveled. The hidden Maasai gem of the Ngorongoro highlands.
3,682m / 12,080 ft.
While not an imposing beast, Loolmalasin will get you to significant altitude.
If you are the type that can’t sit still for long, it is a great day excursion during your safari to stretch the legs.
You might even spot some zebra’s on the route.
This mountain is well off the beaten path and absent of crowds as it is not as popular as Kili, Meru, and even Ol Doinyo Lengai. But the views are spectacular and the experience is unique.
The Beta.
There is one standard route to the summit of Loolmalasim. While it may seem excessive, you will have three guides with you. The first your Great Rift Guide, who will be your personal interpreter, and take care of all the logistics of your trip, so you don’t have to worry about any of it.
You’ll also be accompanied by a Ranger, who will likely carry a rifle. Since you will be walking through wildlife areas, they are there to protect you.
And finally, you will be accompanied by a local Maasai Guide. They are there to guide you on their sacred lands.
Camping is typically not done on the mountain. Porters and your Chef will not accompany you. The climb is a day trip, usually done as a component of your safari.
The route starts by driving cross country past a traditional Maasai village. From there you will go on foot when the ground becomes too rough for the vehicles. The route winds gently through beautiful grasslands with the possibility of seeing wildlife.
The summit has some interesting rocky outcroppings, and the view of the plains all around is just beautiful.
Timeless culture and sacred ancient ground.
