Mt. Meru
Kilimanjaro’s little sister. An African top 10 summit.
4,562m / 14,968 ft.
The centerpiece of Arusha with a command of the entire area.
As with most mountains in the Great Rift Valley, Meru is a volcano, with an ash cone.
In contrast to Kilimanjaro’s peak name Uhuru, or Freedom, Meru’s summit name is Socialist Peak.
The summit has the most incredible view of the sun rising behind Kilimanjaro.
Mt. Meru is a great preparation climb for Kilimanjaro to start your acclimatization, or as an alternative for time or budget restricted travelers.
The Beta.
Currently there is only one, well established route up Meru, the Momella Route.
The two camps consist of beautiful and comfortable huts.
Mt. Meru can be climbed in 3 or 4 days.
After reaching the second camp, the night before the summit push, a short trek up to the summit of Little Meru is encouraged. The summit push should not be underestimated as there are short, scrambly sections that can be iced over, and you will feel the effects of altitude. It can also be very windy and cold on the ridge and approach.
Having said that, Meru will be an incredible experience and a must do on your African ‘to do’ checklist!
Spectacular views. A Great Rift Valley classic.
